The maximum output power is 320 W, which means the maximum output current of 8 A is only available at lower output voltages. At the maximum output voltage of 56 V, the driver is power-limited and can deliver approximately 5.71 A. This LED driver is an excellent choice for professional custom grow lights, high-power LED luminaires, and industrial lighting systems using premium LED modules based on Osram OSCONIQ, Seoul Semiconductor, Cree, and similar high-efficiency LEDs. For maximum system efficiency (rated up to 94%), the total LED forward voltage should be designed as close as possible to the upper end of the operating range, ideally between 45 V and 54 V.

Dimming features (AB version): The built-in 3-in-1 dimming interface is reliable, stable, and very easy to integrate.

  • PWM control: The driver reliably accepts PWM frequencies from approximately 100 Hz to 3 kHz. When using a microcontroller, a transistor driver is recommended for proper level shifting. Inverted PWM control is fully supported by using a transistor that shorts the DIM+ and DIM− terminals together. This is the simplest and most reliable method for dimming the driver from Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and similar microcontrollers.
  • Manual dimming: A standard 100 kΩ linear potentiometer can be used. The potentiometer power rating is not critical because the dimming circuit draws only a negligible current. Connect the DIM+ and DIM− terminals to the two outer potentiometer terminals, with the center terminal acting as the wiper.

Limitations: The driver cannot smoothly start from an absolute 0% output level. In practice, LED emission begins at approximately 8–12% of rated output power. This should be considered when developing microcontroller firmware. For most Mean Well XLG drivers, the minimum PWM duty cycle required for reliable startup is approximately 30–32 out of 255 using an 8-bit PWM signal.

This indicates that the driver supports "3-in-1" output current dimming via a 0–10V regulated voltage source, PWM signal, or a standard 100kΩ variable resistor. In the HLG/ELG series, support for external dimming is indicated by the letter "B" at the end of the part number. When using MEAN WELL drivers, there is no need to worry about any additional protection; it is sufficient to adhere to standard high-voltage grid connection practices, wire insulation regulations, and to utilize appropriate residential or industrial input circuit breakers. In MEAN WELL LED drivers and power supplies, the manufacturer integrates a comprehensive suite of protective features, including protection against overload, short circuits at the output, overtemperature, and overvoltage, along with various other safeguards depending on the specific series of the LED driver or power supply.

The most likely cause is the activation of the underload protection (low voltage cutoff). For example, if the minimum output voltage of the LED driver is 51V, and an LED matrix with a nominal voltage of 36V is connected to it (insufficient load), the driver will begin to ramp up the voltage upon startup until the current reaches its set limit, such as 1A. However, since a 1A current will flow through the circuit at 36V instead of the required 51V minimum, the LED driver will immediately trip its protection circuit and shut down the output. After a brief pause, it will attempt to restart the LED matrix, causing a 1A current to flow again at a voltage below the minimum allowable threshold. This cycle repeats, resulting in sharp LED flashes at a frequency of approximately 1Hz. If the connected load is 100% compliant with all specifications, the issue may be due to a faulty LED module, a poor connection, or a failure within the LED driver itself.
